This Week's Featured Hockey Moment

My company assembled a hockey team that consisted of 4 skaters that learned to skate only months before; and another 4 skaters who had never played organized hockey (one of which was myself); and even one player who didn’t have the slightest clue as to what on “offside” was. We joined an E-League only to be handed a discouraging record of 1-14-2. There was disappointment, frustration and many heads held low. We knew we had a long way to go, so in our next season, we got harder on each other and pushed for better results. There were arguments, pointed fingers, and blame going left-and-right. The locker room was the worst place to be before and after the game. We started that season 1-5-1 thinking we were on the same track as last season. But over time; we realized that we had to start sticking to the basics and staying in position - to at least play smart defensive hockey if we wanted any hope of improvement. Then one game we all swore to play simple stay-at-home hockey, and to wait until the opposing team made mistakes...we won that game 4-1 and it was the beginning of what turned into an undefeated streak of 11 games… going 7-0-4. We made it to the playoffs with a record of 9-8-5 and went on to win the E division championship allowing only 3 goals in 4 games, while scoring 14. It was a PERFECT example of how important it is to work together as a team and to play smart positional hockey. Our Company is currently writing up a bio on our "Cinderella" story to post on our Company website and have placed the trophy in the Presidents office, along with an eventual plaque version of our story. I couldn't be more proud of our guys and their ability to turn arguments and finger pointing into a positive method of learning and eventual constructive feedback. The guys who once were rookies and could barely stay on their feet, have become important and valuable contributors to the team - reliable and effective each and every game. To go from a rude awakening, to a Championship season, was something that none of us thought was possible. And that is my all time greatest hockey moment - the moment the buzzer went and we knew we had won the Championship...even if it was only E-League… it was our Stanley Cup.
